F-Gas Training Centre

Developing the East of Scotland's F-Gas Training Centre (Dalkeith)

M&M Compliance Training

F Gas Compliance Picture

We are building a purpose-built F-Gas training centre at our Dalkeith base—positioned to be the only dedicated facility in the east of Scotland for FM contractors and engineers who need certification and hands-on practice.

Purpose: To deliver practical skills for installation, servicing, leak checking, recovery and decommissioning on stationary RACHP equipment, mapped to GB-retained F-gas requirements (personnel & company certification).

What we’re building (phase 1)

  • Live-working booths: assembly, evacuation, charging, recovery, pressure testing and fault-finding
  • Brazing/soldering stations: copper tube joints with controlled hot-work areas and extraction; optional Brazer approval assessment pathway (BS EN 13133).
  • A2L-ready setups: procedures for low-GWP refrigerants alongside H&S controls (referenced to BS EN 378 principles for safe locations, alarms and ventilation).
  • LEV for hot-work fume: designed, commissioned and tested to HSG258.
  • Assessment rigs: leak-check, evacuation, recovery and records to mirror audit expectations (Article 4 leak checks; Article 10 certification).

Why this matters (legal duties in GB)

  • Individuals working on stationary RACHP equipment must hold the correct F-gas qualification (Category I–IV, see table). Companies that contract such work must also be certified by an approved body.
  • Training and certification requirements derive from Article 10 (training/certification) and activity thresholds (e.g., leak checks under Article 4).

Candidate routes (proposed delivery)

Route

Typical learner

What you can do after passing

Notes

Category I

Experienced RACHP engineers

All activities: install, service, maintain, recover, decommission, leak check

Full scope.

Category II

FM/maintenance engineers

Install, service, maintain and recover on systems <3 kg F-gas (or <6 kg hermetic)

Restricted charge thresholds.

Category III

Recovery operatives

Recover refrigerant on systems <3 kg (or <6 kg hermetic)

No install/service.

Category IV

Leak-check technicians

Perform leak checks without breaking into the circuit

Detection/records only.

Company certification is separate and required when contracting works to others.

Skills you will practise

  • Leak checking methods and thresholds; documenting findings to Article 4 audit trails.
  • Recovery and charging with correct cylinders, labelling and records.
  • Evacuation, dehydration and pressure testing to manufacturer/specification requirements.
  • Brazing technique on copper tube, joint prep, purge, filler selection; optional brazer approval test (BS EN 13133).
  • Safe systems of work: hot-work controls and LEV use/inspection per HSG258.
  • System safety: equipment placement, ventilation and alarms aligned to BS EN 378 principles.

Facilities and controls (training booths)

  • Zoned hot-work bays with screens, purge gas provision and torch stands
  • LEV hoods with capture testing and TExT schedule (COSHH Reg. 9 practice; guided by HSG258)
  • Fixed gas detection & alarms; emergency isolation; spill kit and recovery station (BS EN 378 concepts)
  • Evidence packs: assessment records, leak-check logs, recovery tickets and candidate portfolios

Who should attend

  • FM contractors maintaining NHS and commercial estates
  • In-house estates/M&E teams moving to Category II or Category I work scopes
  • HVAC service partners seeking company certification readiness (documentation and process)

What you’ll leave with

  • A mapped F-gas qualification route (Category I–IV) aligned to GB-retained requirements (Reg. 303/2008 and Article 10)
  • Practical evidence of competence on live rigs
  • A clear checklist for company certification application
